Day 1 of Inktober.  For those who don’t know, Inktober is a drawing a day challenge going on for the whole month of October.  Each day has a different theme, and today’s theme is “pumpkin”.  My friend Stacy made a handy little chart with all the themes if you were thinking of getting in on it, or are just a curious spectator.  It’s a fun way to get you drawing every day and who doesn’t like Halloween?  I will post some of my Inktober drawings here, but be sure to check out my instagram feed @workweak for all of them. I will be batch posting a bunch of Inktober drawings to my etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/workweak) after a few pile up.  If you were interested in grabbing one then be sure to check out my shop or just shoot me a line at mahan.dave@gmail.com.

Attention spooky people of Vermont: I will have a few pieces from my 2013 degree project on display at the 2014 Art of Horror exhibition at The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery in Burlington, VT. There will be all kinds of awesome entertainment at the opening, and a ton of great artists showing work. Be sure to swing by The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery’s facebook page for more info. For those of you who are not familiar with my 2013 degree project, I spent a year investigating topics relating to witchcraft, paganism, and the occult as I was working towards my BFA in Illustration at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. More work from that series can be seen at www.davemahanart.com.

The event page for the opening can be found here… https://www.facebook.com/events/683932731714381/

On a total side note, a friend of mine brought up how witchcraft, paganism, and the occult doesn’t really qualify as “horror”. I agree. However, I can totally see why my pieces might fit in with the rest of the show. I tried pitching my entire thesis to a couple of galleries and they all said “maybe around Halloween” and never got back to me. The good people at the S.P.A.C.E. Gallery in Burlington are enthusiastic about horror and enthusiastic about my art. I can’t really complain about that or call them out for grouping my work in with a horror themed show.

The next illustration project I’m currently putting together is an illustration/music combo. If all goes according to plan, it will come with a cd of some new songs I’ve been working on. I’ve done a lot of illustration work for random bands, but this is the first time I’m pairing my art with my own music.

New large scale mixed media work coming soon. I’m trying to get enough new material for a gallery show by the fall. Stay tuned.

Working on a flier for a good pal of mine. There’s nothing like spending your Saturday night drawing moonshine bottles and outhouses.

Before and after Boston Comiccon. Thank you to all the people who stopped by my table this weekend. The first printing of The Red Masks part one is sold out, the first printing of GRIMOIRE is running low, and I’m almost out of Night Surgeon shirts. The remaining books, prints, and shirts will be up in my etsy shop later this week along with the second printing of the Red Masks book and couple of new prints. I am already counting the days until Boston Comiccon 2015. Hopefully I will see some of you there. I will post more info about other conventions and events that I will be set up at. Stay tuned if you are dying for a chance to meet me in person and give me a high five. Also, this is as close as I will ever get to posting a selfie on tumblr. Enjoy it.

Some new huge mixed media stuff in the works. If you’re into huge mixed media stuff then you’re probably cool in my book.

I wasn’t sure if it would be ready for Boston Comiccon, but I just picked up The Red Masks part one from the printer tonight. I still have to trim the pages, fold them, staple them, and finish then off, but these guys will be available this weekend at the show. I only have a limited number of these, so they are first come first served. I can’t really hold any aside, but if they sell out at the show then I will make up another run of them ASAP.

This year’s Boston Comiccon is the first show that I will openly be offering commissions at.  I have done commissions at conventions before, but it has never been advertised.  If you are coming to the show and would like a commission from me the rates are $40 for a 9”x12” black and white mixed media drawing on watercolor paper (like the two pictured in this image).  I will also be offering larger 12”x18” commissions for $80, but only a limited number of this size commission will be available.  If you are coming to the convention and know that you want something (or more specifically something complicated) then please email me your ideas at mahan.dave@gmail.com so I can get the sketching out of the way and ink it up at the show.  Sketching ideas at conventions often takes me a long time since I’m talking to people all day, but the inking is a fast and fun process that I can bang out in no time. I want to make sure that I can get to everyone who wants a commission, so be sure to email me ahead of time if that works for you.  If you want me to do a drawing on a blank comic cover or in your sketchbook then the rates are the same as the smaller commission fee.  If you can’t make it to the show but still want a commission then feel free to email me.  I will be doing commissions at this reduced rate (plus shipping) for the month of August.
