"Gorgon" 8”x10” Acrylic and Transfers on Masonite.  I’m trying to get back in to working with mixed media, so expect a bunch of small experiments to be flooding your way once the comiccon madness is all over.  I already have a closet full of giant wood panels, so maybe it would be a good idea to keep them small for now.

Good morning.

I woke up the other morning and scribbled “blind witch iron crown” in my sketchbook. I don’t often remember my dreams, so I have been trying to keep a sketchbook around to write down the last things I remember before waking up. These random snippets of epic dreams make for good warmup sketches when I don’t know what to draw.

"Time Lord" (July 2014)
9”x12” Ink, Gouache, Graphite, and Gel Pen on Bristol.  Digital color was added to the top image using the mixed media drawing as source material.

I worked up this drawing (the bottom image) to show an example of what I would be doing for pre-order commissions at Boston Comiccon (August 8-10 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, MA). Tom Baker is my favorite actor to have played Dr. Who, so he seemed like a good subject to play with. The original black and white drawing will be available to purchase at Boston Comiccon, and I’m going to experiment with some different print options for the color version.

I have done commissions at the last couple of conventions that I exhibited at, but have never set up a commission pre-order online. If you are coming to the convention and know that you want a commission then feel free to shoot me a message or email me at mahan.dave@gmail.com with your idea and how large a piece you are looking for. I will be doing 9”x12” black and white pieces (much like the Black and White image in this post) for $40 and 12”x18” black and white pieces for $80. Commissions take me a long time at conventions since I spend most of my time talking to people and can’t focus as much on drawing. You probably have a better chance of getting a more epic commission if I have time beforehand to plan it out and start sketching. I also did a cover commission last year for a blank cover issue of Daredevil and had a lot of fun with it. Anyone who would want that sort of thing should bring your blank cover books to Boston Comiccon this year.

Some process images of new drawings and prints that I will have with me at Boston Comiccon.  The convention will be from August 8-10 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, MA.  I will be set up there all three days with all kinds of original art, prints, the last few Night Surgeon shirts, and my three recent books.  Stop by and say hi if you are in that neck of the woods.

These will be available at Boston Comiccon (August 8-10 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, MA). The remaining prints will be available online after the show. Thank you to everyone who has been patiently waiting for their prints, zines, and commissions (like this one I just finished up). I am slowly unpacking and getting settled in my new place, so everything that needs to be sent out will be heading your way soon. In the mean time, deluxe versions of GRIMOIRE are still available in my etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/workweak), and come with a black and white commission much like this one on the inside back cover.

I am almost done with “The Red Masks part 1” and it looks like the book will be printed and ready to go by Boston Comiccon (August 8-10 at the Seaport World Trade Center).  In the meantime, here are some new illustrations, and reworkings of older pieces from the series.

More images from The Red Masks can be seen at www.facebook.com/davemahanillustrator and prints of select pieces are currently available at www.etsy.com/shop/workweak
